Key Takeaways:

  • Maharashtra remains the hottest region, with multiple cities crossing 43°C.
  • Banda (UP) recorded the country’s highest temperature at 44.8°C.
  • Heat wave conditions prevail across parts of Maharashtra and adjoining regions.
  • Relief is unlikely for 3 days; thunderstorms may bring temporary respite after April 19.

The state of Maharashtra has been the hottest part of the country. The other areas catching up with the heat are parts of Telangana, East Madhya Pradesh, Southeast Uttar Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and border areas of Rajasthan. Earlier, Akola recorded the highest temperature for three consecutive days between 12th and 14th April and breached the 44°C mark on 14th and 15th April 2026. The highest temperature in the country, 44.8°C, was recorded yesterday at Banda (UP). Akola was the second highest with 44.2°C.

The landlocked subdivisions of Maharashtra have recorded temperatures in excess of 40°C across the state. Locations breaching the 43°C mark include Akola (44.2°C), Amraoti (44°C), Wardha (43.9°C), Nagpur (43.1°C), Beed (43.1°C), Sholapur (43.3°C), and Malegaon (43.2°C). Cities like Buldhana and Beed have registered temperatures about 5°C above normal and are under heat wave conditions.

A well-marked anticyclone persists over Maharashtra and North Karnataka between 10,000’ and 20,000’ in the mid and higher levels of the atmosphere. The downward push of the column of air due to this feature is raising the heat content over the region. There is no relief likely from the extreme heat for the next three days. Thereafter, scattered light to moderate thunderstorm activity, staggered in nature, is likely over parts of the state. This may provide temporary relief between 19th and 23rd April 2026. Heat wave conditions will extend to cover parts of Telangana, North Interior Karnataka, and East Madhya Pradesh as well.
