May 19, 2025, 3:56 PM | Skymet Weather TeamBengaluru witnessed a rainy week between 12th and 18th May 2025. The climax was yesterday, when the city observatory recorded 105 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, most of it during midnight. This was the second heaviest rainfall of 24 hours in the last 15 years. The heaviest spell of 115mm was registered on 18th May 2022.
The HAL observatory recorded 78 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. The city has gathered a total of 141.1 mm of rainfall, and the HAL station has gone past 200mm during the period of 01st-19th May 2025. More showers are likely in the next two days. The remnant effect will go on for the third day as well.
There is a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, off South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu. Another cyclonic circulation is lying over the North Coastal Karnataka and South Konkan regions, which is likely to become more marked tomorrow. The trough line joining these two is placed north of Bengaluru, not very far from the tech city. The circulations are ideally placed to provide convergence over and around South Interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru, triggering rainfall activity.
Sky condition is likely to remain overcast with a chance of light rain in the afternoon hours today and tomorrow. However. The spread and intensity will increase towards evening and night hours on both days. Under the combined influence of these circulations, a low-pressure area will form over the Konkan Coast on 21st May 2025.
The formation and subsequent movement of the system over North Konkan and the East-Central Arabian Sea will drag the moisture away from southern parts of Karnataka. After having moderate to heavy showers today and tomorrow, the capital city will observe the remnant effect on 21st May as well. The rains will vacate South Interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mandya, Hassan, and neighborhoods, on 22nd May and later. The rains will return again, around the time of the onset of the southwest monsoon over mainland Kerala.
