Chennai has been experiencing a prolonged dry spell this month. Between August 1 and August 13, the city has not recorded any meaningful rainfall. Only on five occasions did light, isolated showers occur, and the combined total from these events was just 9.1 mm.

The normal average rainfall for Chennai in August is 132.8 mm, which means the city is lagging far behind its seasonal quota.

Forecast for the Week Ahead

Rain: No significant rainfall is expected over Chennai during the next week. However, patchy light rain may occur in some areas over the next 2–3 days.

Temperatures:

Maximum: 32°C to 34°C

Minimum: 26°C to 27°C

Seasonal Rainfall Pattern

It’s important to note that October and November are Chennai’s wettest months, with average monthly rainfalls of 300.3 mm and 373.6 mm respectively, mainly due to the Northeast Monsoon.

Current Weather System

At present, a low-pressure area has formed over the west-central Bay of Bengal, near the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts. This system is expected to move westwards and intensify further.

With the focus of moisture and cloud development around this weather system, dry westerly winds will continue to dominate along the Tamil Nadu coast, including Chennai. As a result, significant rain activity will remain away from the city for at least the next week.
