Delhi Records Hottest Day : Rise in Mercury Expected, Rains Unlikely
Jun 10, 2025, 12:41 PM | Skymet Weather TeamDelhi recorded the highest temperature of this year yesterday. Safdarjung, the base station and record repository for Delhi, registered the season’s highest temperature of 43.4°C, overtaking the earlier high of 42.3°C recorded on 16th May 2025.
The temperature was about 3.4°C above the normal and falls short of the heat wave criteria. Yes, some other observatories breached the 45°C mark and witnessed heat wave conditions. The highest day temperature in the Delhi area was recorded at IGNOU – 45.5°C. This was closely followed by Ayanagar and Mungeshpur settling at 45.3°C and 45°C respectively. A further rise in the mercury level is likely today.
Delhi breaches 45°C quite often in June. Invariably, the highest temperature of the month is recorded in the first half of June, before the arrival of the monsoon. The normal date for the monsoon over Delhi is 27th June. Last year, the base station recorded a high of 45.2°C on 17th June. The highest ever temperature of 46.7°C was recorded on 17th June 1945.
Delhi is likely to have temperatures ranging between 43°C and 45°C for the next three days. Today, the temperature is likely to reach about 44°C and may get retained tomorrow as well. Due to the likely formation of back-to-back monsoon circulations over the Bay of Bengal, the wind pattern is likely to change across the Indo-Gangetic plains. Easterly winds are expected to sweep the eastern parts and Uttar Pradesh anytime soon. Delhi will observe this change around 13th–14th June. Accordingly, the temperature is likely to drop below 40°C after 14th June 2025.
La Nina Update: ENSO, IOD Both Neutral; MJO Passive Too
The change in the wind pattern brings the east-west trough closer to Delhi on 13th June and later on the weekend also. There is an outside chance of a brief spell of dust storm or thunderstorm on the weekend. However, the conditions will be more settled and favourable for pre-monsoon activity sometime next week, around 17th–29th June 2025. Southwest monsoon will also inch closer to the national capital by that time.
