Rainy Days Ahead For Delhi: Heavy Showers Today-Tomorrow
Delhi/NCR witnessed light to moderate rainfall in the past 24 hours. These showers were heavier the previous day, on Saturday. Base station Safdarjung recorded 13 mm and Palam registered 7 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. Light to moderate rainfall will continue through this week across most parts of the national capital. The intensity and spread could increase over the next 48 hours.
The record station of Delhi has amassed 303.5 mm of rainfall during this month so far, about 34% higher than the monthly normal of 226.8 mm. Earlier, the months of June and July also recorded excess rainfall of 45% and 24%, respectively. The state of Delhi has recorded monsoon rainfall of 553.8 mm against the normal of 408 mm between 1 June and 24 August, amounting to a surplus of 36%. Out of this, Central Delhi has been the rainiest with an excess of 47%, while South Delhi is the lowest with a seasonal shortfall of -17%. With more showers expected in the remaining days of August, the excess margin will increase further this week.
A cyclonic circulation persists over Northeast Rajasthan and Haryana. Another circulation, associated with the remnant low-pressure area, is marked over Northwest Madhya Pradesh and Southwest Uttar Pradesh. The monsoon trough connecting these two circulations is running south of Delhi, passing through Bikaner, Jaipur, and Gwalior before extending eastward. The trough is expected to retain this position with minor north-south oscillations for the next 3–4 days before briefly diffusing. A fresh monsoon system evolving over the Bay of Bengal will move inland and bring the trough closer to Delhi once again.
Rainfall in the next 48 hours may be moderate, mostly during late evening and night, with one or two heavy spells possible. Light to moderate rainfall will continue as a regular feature this week. Moist monsoon easterly winds will dominate, keeping temperatures suppressed. Maximum temperatures are unlikely to exceed 35°C and may hover around 33°C. A cloudy sky, moderate breeze, and intermittent showers will help keep heat levels abated during the remaining days of the month.
