The month of August ended on a rainy note for Delhi. Though the rains were light over the weekend, persistent clouds kept the mercury under check. August is the rainiest month of the monsoon season, with a normal of 226.8mm rainfall. The monthly total far exceeded the normal and finished above it by 48%. All three monsoon months—June, July, and August—have recorded above-normal rainfall. Cumulative rainfall remained surplus for Delhi, with an excess of 37%. More showers are expected during the week ahead.

There is a cyclonic circulation over the Northeast Rajasthan and Haryana region. Another circulation is marked over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha coast. The monsoon trough is connecting these two systems and passes through Bikaner-Gwalior, keeping Delhi north of it, albeit within the active range of the trough. Another weather system is likely to enter the Bay of Bengal shortly. This system, after crossing the coast, will control the position of the monsoon trough, which will tend to shift southward very slowly.

Under this scenario, Delhi is likely to receive moderate showers today and tomorrow. There is a likelihood of one or two heavy showers in some areas. More activity is expected later in the evening and night. As the new low-pressure system advances inland, the southward shift of the trough will increase its distance from Delhi. Accordingly, mostly light showers, interspersed with a few moderate passing spells, are expected on the 3rd and 4th of September. The weather system will head for South Rajasthan, North Madhya Maharashtra, and Gujarat between the 6th and 8th of September. Delhi will be placed at a safe distance during this period, and so the rainfall will mostly be light.

Persistent cloud cover will be a regular feature during the week. As a result, mercury levels will remain checked—low 30s during the day and low 20s in the late night/early morning hours. The month of September has a normal of 128mm for Delhi. It will start on a rainy note and may keep pace with the previous three months in meeting the target.
