Heat Wave Over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Telangana, North Karnataka : Next Three Days
Key Takeaways
- Banda records highest temperature in India for second straight day at 44.8°C
- Vidarbha and East UP remain hottest regions with multiple locations above 44°C
- Anticyclone to push temperatures up by 2–3°C, increasing heatwave risk
- Thunderstorms from April 20 to bring gradual relief by April 22–26
Vidarbha and parts of East Uttar Pradesh have been the hottest regions of the country. Banda in Uttar Pradesh has recorded the highest temperature in the country for the second consecutive day. The city registered maximum temperatures of 44.8°C and 44.4°C on April 15 and 16, 2026. These temperatures are about 4°–4.5°C above normal and narrowly qualify for heatwave conditions.
The Vidarbha subdivision of Maharashtra has also recorded temperatures in excess of 44°C at a few places. Akola, Amravati and Wardha breached this mark yesterday as well. These temperatures are about 3°C above normal and fall just short of the heatwave criteria. A few places in East Madhya Pradesh, including Raisen, Hoshangabad, Chhindwara and Malanjkhand, have exceeded 42°C. Mana and Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh recorded temperatures close to 43°C. Adilabad and Nizamabad in Telangana reeled under extreme heat, with temperatures of 42.7°C and 43.8°C respectively.
All these places have a normal temperature range of 41°–42°C around this time of the year. Therefore, heatwave conditions generally occur when temperatures reach or exceed 45°C. Such conditions are likely to develop in parts of these states over the next 2–3 days.
An anticyclone persists over interior Maharashtra and adjoining Telangana and north interior Karnataka. Gulbarga in north Karnataka has also crossed the 44°C mark. This heat-inducing anticyclone will trigger subsidence, leading to a rise in temperatures at lower levels. Day temperatures are likely to increase by 2–3°C over the next few days, potentially leading to heatwave conditions.
Pre-monsoon thunderstorm activity is expected to begin over these regions from April 20 onwards and increase in both spread and intensity in the following days. Marginal relief from heat is likely between April 22 and 26, 2026.
