Mumbai witnessed vigorous monsoon conditions in the month of August. Earlier, July—otherwise the rainiest month—struggled to capture even the normal monthly rainfall. July recorded 798.4 mm of rainfall against the monthly normal of 840.7 mm. However, August caught up with the typical Mumbai monsoon and registered very heavy downpours between 15th and 20th August. Thrice, the city gathered over 200 mm of rainfall in 24 hours during this period. The month of August has so far accumulated 1075.5 mm of rainfall against the normal of 585.2 mm. This is the second-highest August rainfall for the city in the last 15 years. Earlier, the marker observatory Santacruz had recorded 1240.1 mm of rainfall in August 2020.

The low-pressure area over Central Madhya Pradesh has weakened, but the remnant circulation is still marked up to higher levels. This feature will move westward slowly and meander over that area for the next three days. Thereafter, it will get placed over the tri-junction of Southwest Madhya Pradesh, South Rajasthan, and North Gujarat between 02nd and 05th September 2025. This location of the weather system favours heavy rainfall activity for Konkan in general and Mumbai in particular. In the meantime, another low-pressure area is likely to form over the Northwest Bay of Bengal around 01st/02nd September. Such a situation, where either end of the monsoon trough holds an embedded circulation, gives rise to the ‘dumbbell effect’ and reinforces the strength of each system. This phase will increase monsoon intensity over Mumbai and suburbs.

Intermittent moderate showers with breaks in between are likely on 29th and 30th August 2025. One or two short-duration heavy spells cannot be ruled out. A mix of moderate to heavy showers is likely on 31st August and 01st September. The intensity and strength will build up further, and heavy rain and thundershowers are expected between 02nd and 05th September. The scale and strength of rains will affect communication and connectivity. It may even play ‘spoilsport’ in the festivities of Ganesh Utsav. Broad clearance in weather activity will happen after 06th September, when the system over Gujarat and Rajasthan gets displaced towards the South Pakistan region, at a safe distance from the Konkan Coast.
