The financial capital of the country, Mumbai, is likely to get drenched with heavy rains during the second half of the week. The showers are likely to be intense, incessant, and heavy between 22nd and 24th May 2025.

Moderate showers are expected before and after these dates as well. Some parts of the city may buckle under unabating spells of heavy rains, more so on 23rd and 24th May. The city may set a new record of heavy rainfall for the month of May.

A cyclonic circulation is coming up over South Konkan and North Coastal Karnataka anytime soon. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form late tomorrow off the Konkan Coast in the east-central Arabian Sea.  This will strengthen further to a depression on 22nd May, abeam the Konkan and Mumbai Coast, with its center a little away from the landmass.

Moving northeastward, the weather system will further intensify to a deep depression on 23rd May, abeam South Gujarat, over the Northeast Arabian Sea. There are chances for the depression to upscale into a tropical cyclone over the Northeast Arabian Sea, off the South Saurashtra Coast. Confirmation of a cyclone needs an observation period of another 48 hours.

Mumbai is likely to get deluged as the system moves parallel to the coastline in close proximity to the Konkan region. Moderate rainfall, interspersed with isolated heavy showers, is likely for Mumbai on 21st and 22nd May 2025.

As the system moves a little away from the coast, westerly streams will take ‘head on’ the Konkan Coast in general and Mumbai in particular on 23rd and 24th May 2025. The high tide is also likely between 9 and 10 a.m. and p.m. on these two days.

Heavy rainfall may result in localized flooding and inundation of low-lying areas. Even the roads and streets may get small streams of water, making commuting difficult. The interminable rains may impact the rail, road, and air traffic.

The air operations may need temporary suspension and, therefore, result in delays and diversions. Weather conditions will improve, amidst moderate and intermittent rains, on 25th and 26th May 2025. Exercise utmost caution between 22nd and 24th May 2025.
