Heavy Rains Coming Up Over Karnataka, Maharashtra, Konkan-Mumbai

Most parts of South Peninsula observed mild monsoon activity during the last one week, between 04th and 10th September. All the sub-divisions put together, South Peninsula recorded a huge deficiency of 48% rainfall during this period. Outside Madhya Maharashtra, most other parts of the state like Vidarbha and Marathwada registered highly deficient rainfall. Even Mumbai has not received any rain for the last four days. North Interior and South Interior Karnataka remained deficient with 85% and 59% rainfall, respectively. Weather conditions will change significantly starting this weekend and will roll over into the whole of next week.

A broad-scale cyclonic circulation, earlier lying over the Bay of Bengal, is now persisting over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Coastal Odisha. Under its influence, a low-pressure area may form over this region in the next 24 hours. Later, this weather system is likely to move across Telangana, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. It is likely to stay put over parts of North Karnataka, Telangana, and border parts of Maharashtra between 13th and 16th September. While the weather system will meander over these pockets, the peripherals will extend far ahead, reaching Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan & Goa.

Courtesy of the weather system, isolated heavy activity has already started in some pockets. Sholapur recorded 118mm rainfall yesterday. Even Gulbarga, Raichur, and Bengaluru registered moderate to heavy showers. The spread and intensity are likely to increase over the next few days. Starting 13th September and lasting till 16th September, the chief beneficiaries will be North Karnataka, Telangana, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra, and Konkan region. The weather activity along Konkan & Goa will extend beyond this period and will also reach Coastal South Gujarat as well. Heavy rains are expected over these parts, more so for Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan & Goa. Mumbai is expected to observe a week-long rainy spell between 13th and 19th September 2025. Heavy rains are likely for the coastal city and suburbs on 14th & 15th Sep and possibly another round between 17th and 19th September. Broad clearance over the area is expected not earlier than the last week of the month.
