Airport observatory Dum Dum recorded temperatures in excess of 40°C on Sunday and Monday. However, the regional observatory at Alipur is yet to score this mark. The highest so far was 39.4°C on Sunday, which further dropped to 38.6°C on Monday. The city has yet to record any heat wave this season. It is unlikely during this week, as pre-monsoon showers are likely to lash the city and suburbs later this week.
There is a cyclonic circulation over the foothills of Bihar in the lower levels. Also, there is another cyclonic circulation over Assam and its neighborhood. Monsoon activity is on the rise in the Bay of Bengal. A small perturbation is likely to come up over the central parts of the Bay of Bengal. This feature is likely to pump moist southerly winds over Gangetic West Bengal. Under the combined influence of these multiple factors, Kolkata is likely to experience pre-monsoon thundershowers and strong gusty winds between 16th and 20th May 2025. The intensity and spread could be more on the 18th, 19th, and 20th May.
The warm and moist winds will push the discomfort level for the city and surroundings. However, it will suppress the heat factor and restrict the temperatures to under 40°C during the week. Accordingly, the heat wave conditions are unlikely for the city and suburbs.
