Monsoon Lull For Mumbai Till Weekend Next: Revival Around Mid-June
Jun 3, 2025, 1:49 PM | Skymet Weather TeamThe southwest monsoon made an earliest-ever entry over Mumbai this season. The onset of the monsoon was preceded by over two weeks from its normal date of 11th June. Pre-monsoon showers were also fierce in spread and intensity. The monsoon stream hit with a bang, causing a deluge of44 mm of rainfall in 24 hours at Santacruz.
Sister suburb Colaba was submerged with nearly00 mm of rainfall over two days of the onset phase. However, the rains have gone silent now for the last 5 days. And the lean phase will continue.
There are typical situations for Mumbai to enter an active phase of monsoon. An offshore trough becomes a seasonal feature to activate the monsoon. Also, strong westerly winds streaming and meeting ‘head-on’ the Konkan Coast lead to heavy showers over a wide range. Last but not least, the formation of a monsoon low or depression over the Bay of Bengal is the ideal situation for the revival of the monsoon for the financial capital city of the country. None of these are present and also unlikely during this week.
Both the weather systems, the depression off the Konkan Coast in the Arabian Sea and the other one tracking across Bangladesh, have receded far from our region. While the monsoon went silent over most parts, the northeast region was smashed with floods, as normally happens during weak monsoon conditions. Now, that situation is also improving. The monsoon current has gone weak along the complete stretch of the West Coast, barring small and isolated pockets of Goa and Coastal Karnataka.
A fresh monsoon system is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal at the start of next week. The first signs of broad circulation may appear around 10th 10thJune. Consolidation will take another 48 hours, and the first monsoon system of the season will form around mid-week next.
Depletion of monsoon activity will be visible along the West Coast between 04th and 10th June. The westerly monsoon stream will build up, commencing with Kerala, from 11th June onward. The rains will reach Goa and South Konkan, across Coastal Karnataka, on 13th 13thJune. A fresh burst of monsoon is likely over Mumbai anytime around 15th 15thJune. By this time, the monsoon system will race across the East Coast and move deep inland to revive the monsoon activity over large parts, including Mumbai.
