After days of intense heat, Delhi-NCR witnessed a sudden weather shift on Sunday morning. Heavy rain, strong gusty winds, and a thick dust storm swept across the region, offering much-needed relief from scorching temperatures.

Dark clouds took over the skyline early in the morning, followed by powerful winds and widespread dust that sharply reduced visibility. The rainfall that followed cooled the atmosphere, leading to a noticeable dip in temperatures across the city.

Scattered and light showers were reported through the day across various parts of Delhi. Two rounds of intense thundersqualls, accompanied by hailstorm activity, were observed at the Safdarjung base station early Sunday. Peak wind speeds touched 104 kmph, uprooting trees in many areas and disrupting normal movement.

Residents were advised to stay indoors due to flying debris and reduced visibility. Authorities also cautioned against non-essential travel during such severe weather conditions.

Before this change, Delhi had recorded maximum temperatures above 40°C for four straight days. The highest on Saturday was 43.3°C, but Sunday’s weather helped ease the discomfort, pulling down temperatures across the region.

Despite this active spell, the Southwest Monsoon has remained stalled with no forward progress over North India yet. However, early signals indicate that the monsoon may reach close to Delhi by the weekend.

Favourable weather systems are expected to enhance pre-monsoon activity across northwest India, paving the way for monsoon advancement. For now, generally cloudy skies, light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are expected to continue in Delhi till June 19.

With these developments, Delhi is likely to see an early monsoon onset this year, bringing much-needed respite from heat and setting the stage for more widespread rains ahead.
