Monsoon seems to be in a good rainfall cycle for the Indian Sub-Continent. Out of the last seven years, the seasonal rainfall has been normal or above normal during this period, except in 2023. Monsoon 2023 had remained below normal on account of El Nino, which spoiled the annual event quite differently for many parts. Rainfall was deficient over West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Karnataka, Kerala, and Northeastern States.

Monsoon 2025 has the double distinction of being above normal for the season and for the individual month, as well. As an inbuilt characteristic of monsoon, it neither goes bad nor good in all four months. The best of the monsoon will leave about 15% area as rain deficit and the worst of monsoon will generally have normal or above normal rainfall over a similar stretch.

Since 1950, the monsoon rainfall was above average in all four months in 1956, 1961, 1975, and 2007. In that perspective, year 2025 is a historic monsoon year, joining the club of the previous four. However, there could be a change in the overall status for the seasonal rainfall. While all the previous years ended up in excess rainfall (>110%), the current season is expected to finish above normal, at 108% of the long period average.

Notwithstanding that the current season will figure amongst the rare category, but not without concerns for some pockets. Like in the past few years, the rainfall was poor in the Northeastern states, more so for Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya. On the same lines, the state of Bihar witnessed a perpetual shortfall and will possibly end with a deficit of 30% seasonal rainfall, which is huge. Concerns of Marathwada and Rayalaseema, earlier in the season, got addressed halfway through. East Uttar Pradesh and Kerala also could not recover from the perennial scarcity. The best news of the season was: the core monsoon zone of the country performed, as desirable, in the core monsoon months of July and August.
