Journey of Cyclone Phethai began on December 13, with deep depression in Bay of Bengal forming on December 14 and finally into a cyclonic Storm Phethai on December 15. For a short duration, it even intensified into a severe cyclonic storm on December 16 but weakened before the landfall on Monday afternoon.
Phethai had hit the Andhra coast between Kakinada and Narsapur coast bringing heavy to very heavy rains all along the coast Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Vijaywada, East Godavari, West Godavari and Narsapur. Torrential rains were also accompanied with squally winds to the tune of 80-90 kmph gusting up to 100 kmph.
Coming to the current situation, the system continues to move inland across Andhra Pradesh in north direction but simultaneously weakening into a deep depression. From here on, Phethai would recurve northeastwards and travel parallel to the East Coast through Odisha, West Bengal and further up to northeastern states in the next 48 hours.

Heavy to very heavy rains lashes over North Andhra Pradesh and parts of South Odisha including on December 17.
Its peripheral would also give moderate to heavy rains over Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata during the next 24 hours. Thereafter by December 19, Phethai as weakened system would give widespread moderate rains over Northeast India, particularly Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
