Chennai Rains: 10 Latest Developments About Chennai Floods 2017

Torrential rains continue to wreak havoc over Tamil Nadu. Chennai has been witnessing moderate to heavy showers from the past few days.

As rain continues to lash Chennai, we take a look at 10 developments of Chennai Rains.

1.Coastal Tamil Nadu has recorded very heavy showers. Though Chennai witnessed light showers only. The last time the city received such rainfall was during the month of December in the year 2015 when the entire city was submerged in water.

2. Nungambakkam observatory in Chennai has witnessed 13 mm, Parangipettai 106 mm, Karaikal 57 mm, Cuddalore 42 mm and Puducherry 102 mm in last 24 hours. Short spells of intense showers will continue over Coastal Tamil Nadu including Chennai. Thereafter the intensity of rain will decrease as the trough of low as well as the cyclonic circulation will move further south away from the Tamil Nadu coast. After November 7 rain intensity will reduce significantly.

3. These rains can be attributed to the trough of low which is over southwest Bay of Bengal and South Tamil Nadu coast and the cyclonic circulation which is persisting over Sri Lanka.

4. These rains continued during the late night hours as well. Throughout the day, the city remained dry. At night, intense cloud build up continued for a long time.

5. School, colleges remained shut till Saturday due to water logging over the region. The state Disaster Management Authority has also urged people to work from homes and not venture due to waterlogged streets.

6. 2000 relief and aid shelters are in place for coastal districts of Tamil Nadu.

7. Several NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) have been put on alert and other relief teams are also in full swing

8. So far, as per media reports, at least 12 people have been killed in Chennai and its adjoining areas.

9. Due to flooding rains, several areas of Chennai have been waterlogged and localised flooding has been observed in many parts.

10. Social media forums have been flooded with information on Chennai Rains. Twitterati has been using #ChennaiRains. #ChennaiRains2017, #ChennaiFloodTrap, #ChennaiFloodBath and #ChennaiFloodTrap to tweet about rainfall in their areas.
