Just about two days ago, a series of avalanches had wreaked havoc over the residents of Jammu and Kashmir. While four members in a family were buried alive, the 51 RR army sector in Gurez was also hit by avalanches.

Here, at least two avalanches had hit the post wherein several soldiers were trapped. Initially, seven soldiers were rescued and the body of one jawan was recovered. However, the death toll rose to 10 as rescue operations were in full swing. Yesterday, the death toll mounted to 14 which included a major as well.

Today, another avalanche has struck the 56 RR army post in the Kupwara district of North Kashmir. As per the Defence PRO Colonel Rajesh Kalia, rescue operations are underway. As per reports, at least five soldiers are trapped under the snow.

These weather conditions have been attributed to the presence of a Western Disturbance which is currently over North Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir. Heavy rain and snow was observed over the Kashmir valley including other states of the North Indian hills.

As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, scattered light to moderate rain and snow is expected to continue over Jammu and Kashmir along with Himachal Pradesh as well as Uttarakhand. The threat of avalanche remains over the higher reaches in the Kashmir Valley.
