Rain in Odisha

Generally, the states of West Bengal and Odisha witness rain during March via Kal Baisakhi activities. This time the confluence zone which had formed within a short gap over the coastal parts of Odisha has resulted in maximum intensity of rains mainly over Gangetic West Bengal and Northern parts of Odisha.

Currently, West Bengal is 85% above normal wherein the state has received 29.5 mm of rains against the normal of 15.9 mm up till March 22. While, Odisha is 32% above normal wherein the state has recorded 24.2 mm of rains against the normal of 18.3 mm.

As per the statistics the West Bengal state, mainly the southern districts like South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Kolkata and West Midnapore have almost recorded 200% of rains. Not only the southern parts, even Jalpiguri and Cooch Behar have witnessed excess rainfall during this tenure.

The normal frequency of rains in Kolkata in a month are just two days with the average rainfall around 35.2%. However, Kolkata has already observed 73.1 mm of rains and the frequency of days have gone up to five days.

This looks like to be a favourable condition for the cultivation of vegetables. While, at the end of February, rains caused havoc for the potato vegetable and the production went down by almost 20-30%.

Currently, a trough is running extreme over the southern parts of West Bengal to North coast of Odisha. Hence, thunderclouds would develop towards afternoon and evening of today. Chances of light rain and thundershower activities over South Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Balasore, Baripada, Keonjhargarh, Bhadrak and Bhubaneswar would be a sight.

Tomorrow, i.e., March 24 onward, dry weather would be witnessed. As per the experts, the northwesterlies are expected to cover most parts of the states. Morning temperature is likely to drop whereas day temperature would rise with less humid conditions. Another wet spell is likely to affect South Bengal and North Odisha by March 26.
