Budget 2020: Key Highlights for agriculture, horticulture and solar energy, farmers income to double by 2022

The much awaited Union Budget 2020 has begun and our Finance Minister Mrs. Nirmala Sitaraman began with her first theme aspirational India, where she talked about Agriculture. The government has come up with a 16 point plan to double farmers income, liberalising the agricultural sector and to cause some improvements in farm crisis.

The Government has allocated Rs. 2.83 lakh crore to the Agricultural and allied, Irrigation and Rural development. Also, the Government will propose comprehensive measures for 100 water stressed districts.

Farmers Income and Agriculture

The Modi Government will double farmers income by 2022. The government will encourage states to take up model agricultural laws. The government will propose expansion of PM Kusum scheme, which has removed dependence of Kerosene and encouraged the use of solar power. The Government also aims to encourage balanced use of fertilizers. The FY21 agricultural credit target has been set at 15 lakh crore.

Solar Power

Government will promote 20 Lakh farmers to set up solar powered pumps. Government will help 15 lakh farmers to solarize grid connection. Barren land will be encouraged to set up solar power generation. Farmers with fallow land will be helped to set up solar power units.

Horticulture

Government aims to increase milk production to 108 million metric tonnes by the year 2025. Government is aiming to increase fish production to 200 lakh tonnes. Horticulture sector exceeds food grain production, which will now be taken to one product one district.

Kisan Rail, Krishi Udan, Agricultural Warehousing

Indian Railways will set up Kisan Rail to encourage cold supply chain.  Krishi Udaan scheme will be launched by aviation ministry for domestic and international routes. NABARD will map and geotag land available for agricultural warehousing. Village storage scheme will be proposed to be managed by SHEs which will help farmers to store more, furthermore reducing logistics costs. Adding to it, women will manage this mechanism. Financing of warehousing receipts will integrate other e-services.

This is a big boon for the agricultural sector with many schemes introduced. Horticulture and solar power has also been given equal importance.
