On and off Chennai rain expected till 3rd November

Updated on November 2, 11:00 am:  November has brought traits of pleasant weather to Chennai as the city has received on and off moderate rain in last three days. Moderate Chennai rain is likely to continue for another 2-3 hours with possibility of few heavy spells.

The trough from the well-marked low-pressure area around Kerala coast is passing across Tamil Nadu coast, owning to which parts of the southern state, including Chennai, will receive good showers till 3rd November.

Updated on October 31, 1:00 pm:  The Northeast Monsoon has finally arrived, bringing good rain over several areas of South Peninsula on Sunday. Chennai, in particular, has received rain in last 24 hours and rain is expected to continue for another 24-48 hours.

Easterly and north-easterly winds are prevailing over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. We can expect some more scattered rains in next 2 days as well. Thereafter, rains are expected to be subdued over Chennai.

Published on October 30, 12:20 pm: Until last week the weather of Chennai remained dry but recent developments in weather has favoured a change in the weather activities. Due to presence o f a low pressure system near south coastal Andhra Pradesh rains were witnessed in Chennai. The prolonged dry spell over the city of Chennai has finally come to an end.

This weather system has made sure that several districts of North Tamil Nadu including Chennai have been already witnessing cloudy to overcast sky, and such sky will continue to persist for the foreseeable time.

In the last 24 hours, many area of Tamil Nadu including Chennai received good rainfall activity. We can expect some more moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers in next 24 hours. Along with the persisting weather system a fresh low pressure system is expected over southeast Bay of Bengal.

This weather system will make sure that the rains are frequently visiting the northern regions of Tamil Nadu including Chennai. From October 1 till date, actual rainfall received over the city of Chennai is 9.7 mm whereas normal rainfall for this time period is 242.3 mm. So in totality the rainfall has further depreciated to 96% below normal.

However, weathermen predict that November will fare better and rains will pick up pace.
