Cold Freeze North India, Mercury To Dip Further, Rains Unlikely

Northern plains continue to experience dry weather conditions across the region. Cold day conditions prevailed at many places over Punjab and Haryana. Dense to very dense fog engulfed large pockets of these two states, reducing visibility to blinding conditions. Somehow, cold wave conditions have eluded and the minimum temperatures hovered around the normal of 5-6°C at many places.  Rains have also given a slip so far during this month.

Cold-day conditions predominantly engulfed northern parts of Punjab and Haryana.  Sun could barely manage to peep through the lifted envelope of fog, obscuring sun rays. Mercury level did not budge to lift beyond the 10°C mark at Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Karnal and Ambala. These temperatures were 6-7°C below the average. With minimum temperatures also hovering below the threshold of normal, most of these parts observed cold day conditions.

There is no active weather system over the plains and mountains of north India. A dry cyclonic circulation is marked over northern parts of Punjab and Haryana. This will be inconsequential for any weather activity over the region, as such.  Hilly states of the region will remain free from any significant weather activity.  A solitary system in the form of a feeble trough is extending from Southwest Uttar Pradesh to North Gujarat and Southwest Madhya Pradesh. Mild weather activity, manifested as partly cloudy sky with light rain is expected over parts of West Madhya Pradesh, Southeast Rajasthan and may just brush the northern parts of Gujarat. This weather system will clear the region in the next 48 hours.

Morning temperatures are likely to drop further over parts of Punjab and Haryana in the next 3-4 days. Clear days and cold conditions will extend further to parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh after 48 hours. Dense fog will intensify further and spread and intensity will escalate over the states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.  Dry conditions across the region will strengthen the chill factor. Biting cold with windy conditions, both during day and night, are likely for the entire week, over the complete region, without any respite.
