Mumbai weather remains free from the clutch of frigid cold conditions throughout the year. However, during the month of December, temperatures in Mumbai witnesses significant ups and downs. This December was no different. The minimums remained above normal but below 20s in the first week of December up till December 7. Post this, a drop of 4-5°C in minimums was recorded up till December 11. The minimums had again risen and touched the mark of 23°C around December 16 and then again dropped to 16°C on December 20.

As per the records, the lowest temperature of this season for Mumbai was recorded on December 27 at 12.4°C. Presently also, the minimums are well below the normal average. On January 1, Mumbai recorded minimum temperature at 14.8°C, which was four notches below the average mean. We do not expect much change until January 3 as cool northeasterly winds would continue to blow over the city. Hence, morning and night will remain very cool.

As per Skymet Weather, relief would be around January 4 when the winds will once again change their path and will start blowing from south-east direction leading to rise in minimums by 3-4°C.

This up and down phenomenon witnessed by Mumbaikars is due to frequent change in the wind direction. Whenever, cool winds from northeast blows over the city, then the temperatures tend to fall. Whereas, when southeasterly blows, the minimums rise. The see-saw trend is expected to continue till first half of January, Hence, morning and night will remain cool and comfortable for the coming 15 days.
