Cyclone Gulab gives record breaking rain of 267 mm in Visakhapatnam

Cyclone Gulab which had formed over the Bay of Bengal has crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast and weakened into a deep depression. The storm has resulted in hefty rains over coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh.

In fact, the city of Visakhapatnam which has been in close proximity of the storm, has received intense rainfall activities in the last 24 hours, to the tune of 267 mm. This has been the highest rainfall in a span of 24 hours that Visakhapatnam has ever received in the month of September. The all-time record before this stood at 195.4 mm, which was seen on September 20, 2005.

Talking about the monthly figures, the average rains for September stand at 191.1 mm. This month, the city has already recorded 524.6 mm, surpassing the decade old monthly rains record for September, which stands at 307.2 mm, recorded in 2019.

The all-time monthly high for September is slightly on the higher side at about 644.3 mm recorded in September 2005.

As far as the forecast is concerned, the city of Visakhapatnam is expected to see some more rains as the system continues to persist. However, these rains will not be as heavy as the system may move away in some time.
