Delhi temperatures have been on the up for the last three days. From its earlier recording of 31.7°C on 22nd March, it has added over 4°C till yesterday. The base station at Safdarjung recorded a maximum of 36°C. The capital has recorded a maximum of 36.2°C on 14 14Mar 2025, the highest so far this year. The stage seems to be set for breaching this mark, and the mercury may register a new high today. It may go up even a notch further tomorrow. Pre-monsoon heat is just building and will soon become more pronounced in April.

A western disturbance is moving across the Jammu & Kashmir and North Pakistan region. A well-marked induced cyclonic circulation is marked over Central Pakistan and adjoining border areas of North Rajasthan and Punjab. The weather system will not have any direct impact on the city's weather in terms of clouds and rains but will surely influence the wind pattern. As such, the arrival of the western disturbance is heralded by the incursion of warm air ahead of it; the slowdown of the winds adds to the degree of warmth. The surface and low-level winds are likely to remain mild and variable to start the day and stay mild even as the day progresses. This will add a pinch to the afternoon heat. Bright sunshine and weak winds always promote a rise in the mercury levels.

As in contrast with some years, when the temperature exceeded 38°C on more than half of the occasions in the last one decade, March 2025 may remain an exception to underscoring this mark. It could just be akin to the records of last year when the highest maximum was arrested at 37.8°C on 29th Mar 2024, just short of the notional mark of 38°C.

The temperature is expected to rise tomorrow to reach the highest of this month. The day high could as well reach about 5°C or more above the normal. Later, the passage of a western disturbance, followed by the incursion of somewhat cold air in the rear section, will sink the day temperatures by 2°-3°C. The weather conditions are expected to remain dry during the rest of the month. The capital city has recorded a mere 2 mm of rainfall in this month and may go on record to be one of the driest, along with March 2022.
