Parts of Delhi and NCR are expected to witness dust-storm and thunderstorm activities accompanied with rain today afternoon or in the evening hours. As reiterated by Skymet Weather, this would be mark the beginning of pre-Monsoon season over Delhi-NCR in true sense.

These activities will not be widespread and only some pockets of the national capital and adjoining areas of Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad and Ghaziabad would be affected. Possibility of strong winds to the order of 40-50 kmph gusting up to 60 kmph cannot be ruled out during this period.

Now, the pre-monsoon activities will keep on increasing as we progress further into April. Severe intensity dust-storm are possible during the month of May, which would be accompanied with damaging winds.

Although pre-Monsoon season has already begun from March 1 officially, but the first pre-monsoon activity wasn’t witnessed over Delhi and NCR until March 30, that too was a feeble one.

The reason for the upcoming weather can be attributed to an induced Cyclonic Circulation that has formed over West Rajasthan and parts of Pakistan. Also, a trough is extending from this circulation up to North Madhya Pradesh. The easterly winds over Delhi and NCR are expected to feed moisture and the trough will create instability in the atmosphere.

Moreover, temperatures of Northwest India including that of Delhi-NCR are on a rise. At present, isolated pockets of Delhi and NCR are reeling under Heatwave conditions. The combination of high humidity and high temperatures are the most favorable conditions for the development of thunderclouds. This would be case that can be seen today.

Not only this, these thunderstorm would be able to drop soaring temperatures, bringing some relief. However, it would be momentary relief only.
