January is the coldest month for the capital of the country, Delhi. It is during this month that the national capital observes lowest maximum temperatures, lowest average minimums, maximum winter rains, and most frequent fog days.
During the month of January, the average minimum and maximum temperatures of Delhi stand at 7.6°C and 20.5°C, respectively. Meanwhile, the average rainfall amount for the month stands at 19.3 mm.
The mercury levels have so far remained satisfactory while the usual winter rains have remained missing so far. Due to the absence of winter rains, the occurrence of fog has also remained on the lower side.

Apart from one or two significant episodes of thick fog on the first few initial days of the month, the city has mainly remained fog-free. The last week was an instance of the same when Delhi’s skies were clear, and the city remained free from dense fog occurrences.
Technically, shallow fog occurs when the visibility of a place drops beneath 1000 meters. Delhi comes in contact with foggy weather almost daily during the winter months at isolated pockets such as at airports. However, the dense fog that would cause traffic disruptions was not reported in the city in the last week.
According to the weathermen at Skymet Weather, this is an unusual weather condition for Delhi where the city observes such long fog-free days.

As per Skymet Weather, there was no active Western Disturbance which would have induced a weather system over Northern Plains resulting in rains. In the absence of any significant Western Disturbance, the humidity levels also remained low thereby resulting in no-fog days over the national capital and its adjoining regions.
Moreover, even now, dense fog is expected to remain on a lower side to occur over the city as no significant weather system is likely. A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to approach the Western Himalayan region between January 16 and 18. However, its effect will mainly be confined to the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir in terms of rain and snow.
Meanwhile, as far as the plains of North India are concerned, the Western Disturbance will mainly affect the wind direction. A slight drop in the humidity levels is also expected which may cause the visibility to drop tomorrow. However, significant fog is not anticipated for the next week. Hence, for the upcoming week as well, Delhiites will witness wintery mornings and bright sunshine during the day.
