Delhi's monsoon deficit to shrink, heavy showers to lash some parts today

August 12, 2020 8:18 AM | Skymet Weather Team

The long wait for heavy monsoon showers for the national capital and neighborhood seems to be getting over and many parts are poised for a downpour today. The day as such may start on a deceptive note with only a few clouds but the sky will become overcast with heavy cloud towards late evening/night. The rain/thundershower activity could spill over to the next morning and a partial clearance is expected towards the afternoon. The oscillation of the monsoon trough may cause some more showers even on the 13th night and spill over to the next morning.

A low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal tracked through Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. The weakened remnants of this system are going to merge with the monsoon trough that is running in the close proximity of Delhi. The areas of NCR extending towards Uttar Pradesh may experience the more intense activity as compared to Haryana. Some areas are likely to witness loud thunderstorms and lightning in the night.

The month of August is the rainiest for the base observatory Safdarjung with monthly rainfall of 232.5mm. Only 22mm of rainfall has been recorded so far. The overall state of Delhi is struggling with a large seasonal deficiency of 33%. The end of July shortfall of 26% has further mounted with poor rainfall in the first 10 days of August.

Out of 9 districts of Delhi, only 3 are within normal limits, and the rest displaying large deficiencies. The eastern half of Delhi is drought-stricken with large shortages. The Eastern Delhi has failed to reach the halfway mark with seasonal shortfall of 56% and Northeast Delhi trailing with 46%. Severe drought-like conditions are for Central Delhi with a climbing dip of 66%. It is one of the worst performance so far.

High hopes are pinned on the upcoming spell to fill the shortages to some extent. The rains are going to pause again after this and may last for one week. The temperature drop is likely during this spell and the maximum temperature will range between 31-32°C, about 3-4°C below normal.
