The residents of North India today woke up to a foggy morning which was one of the first of this season. While isolated foggy mornings were seen in some areas, widespread dense fog remained absent from the region for some time.

However, this morning was a different one and commuters in many parts of North India faced massive difficulty. Not only this, traffic jams were also seen over the region which resulted in even more difficulty for the residents.

So much so that the visibility in areas including Amritsar, Ludhiana, Sri Ganganagar, Sirsa, Hisar, and Patiala remained nil. Delhi was slightly better but the visibility here was also at a mere 200 metres for quite some time.

Since the beginning of the month, easterly and southeasterly winds were blowing over most parts of Northwest India including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, North Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh. These humid winds from the Bay of Bengal have increased the moisture levels over northern plains and now winds are almost calm.

However, during afternoon and evening hours, cool and dry northerly winds have started blowing from Northwest region. Thus, as the sky is clear, long wave radiation emitted from Earth’s surface lead to rapid cooling of the surface of the earth during the night time. This results in condensation of the moisture available in winds.

Due to this, many parts of Punjab, Haryana and some parts of North Rajasthan as well as West Uttar Pradesh is engulfed by dense fog. As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, these conditions are expected to persist for at least the next two to three days as the weather situation is not likely to change soon.
