Winter came in knocking hard and how over the northwestern plains of India as on Wednesday morning, several flight services were affected at the Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport in Amritsar. A thick layer of fog was seen over the city of Amritsar this morning which affected both the arrival and departure of the domestic and international flights.

An official at the airport said, “Operations have been suspended for some time due to the fog.”

The airline whose flights were delayed includes Air India, Qatar Airways, Spicejet and Air Canada. The thick layer of fog led to zero visibility in Amritsar from 6:00 am to 9:00 am today.

Such fog persisting during this time of the year is not unusual for the city. The minimum temperature around the city is 13°C and forecast for the next 2-3 days is such that humidity levels will be high and low wind activity will result in the persistence of fog over the area.

Fog occurs when the humidity levels are high, somewhere around 75% and temperatures are relatively low. These two factors along with low wind activity result in fog. The situation is similar in Amritsar which has resulted in such fog.
