Fani to bring heavy rains over Northeast India in the next 2 days

It’s been raining over Northeast India since the last one week now. Most parts of Northeast India have been receiving light to moderate rain activities. Heavy rains were also witnessed at one or two places.

These rains were due to the persistence of a Cyclonic Circulation over Assam and adjoining areas. Moreover, a trough was persisting as a semi-permanent feature from Bihar to Manipur, while oscillating between North and South.

Now, another strong feature is about to bring even more rains over the area. We expect a significant increase in rain activities over Northeast India as Cyclone Fani is travelling towards Northeast.

Current status of Cyclone Fani:

The Extremely Severe Cyclone Fani has now weakened into a Cyclonic Storm in early morning over West Bengal and lay centered about 60 km Northwest of Kolkata at 0530 IST. It will weaken further into a Deep Depression and move to Bangladesh by noon.

It will weaken further into a Deep Depression in the next 6 hours and move further in North-northeast direction. Thereafter, it will reach as a Depression over Northeast India.

Due to this, we expect a significant increase in rain activities over Northeastern parts of the country during the next 24 to 48 hours.

The duo states of Assam and Meghalaya may receive heavy to very heavy rains. Other northeastern states will also receive good rains.

Risk of landslides and waterlogging:

These rains might induce flash floods and water logging at many places over the region. Whenever it rains in the hills, water channels tend to collect all the water in a common area leading to localized flooding of a few parts. Also, as its been raining heavily since a long time now, the land has become prone to landslides.

So, the next 24 to 48 hours are very crucial in terms of weather for Northeast India. Thereafter, the intensity will reduce as the weather system in the form of Fani will further degenerate. The weather will start clearing up after May 6.

Until May 6, we expect good rains to continue over the area. Thereafter, there will be a significant decrease. And the temperatures which would have fallen by 7 to 8 degrees over most places will also start increasing.
