Yesterday was a typical pre-monsoon day for . The afternoon was hot, with the mercury breaching 40°C for the first time this month. It was followed by a rapid buildup of tall clouds. Strong, gusty winds kicking up dust were trailed by sharp and intense thundershowers, settling it within minutes, and night became pleasant with a steady, moderate breeze. A similar pattern may get repeated with varying degrees of intensity over the next one week.

The base station at Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 40.2°C, about 0.7°C above the normal. This was the first instance of the month with the temperature crossing the normal. Earlier, in April, the capital city had recorded temperatures in excess of 40°C on 11 days, and the highest of 42.1°C was registered on 26 Apr 2025.

Airport observatory Palam also recorded the first 40°C of this month yesterday. Light to moderate rainfall was recorded at most places in Delhi/NCR.

A cyclonic circulation is marked over central Pakistan and border areas of Rajasthan in the lower levels. Another weak circulation is lying over the foothills of West Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

A feeble trough joining the two is running north of Delhi, in close proximity.  The anticyclonic turning of winds in between the two circulations is providing a small amount of convergence.

This pattern is likely to persist for the next few days. Also, the day temperature is likely to remain between 40°C and 42°C during the remaining days of this week. The accumulated heat will provide a trigger for the buildup of thunderclouds.

Conditions remain favorable for thunderstorm and dust storm activity over the next few days for Delhi and suburbs. These spells will be for shorter durations and accompanied by strong winds. The activity will be a little more intense on 16th and 17th May 2025.

Pre-monsoon showers will spill over to the next week as well. The intensity and spread could be bigger than the current week. Rain, thundershowers, dust storms, and gusty winds are likely between 19th and 22nd May 2025.
