Week Long Pre-Monsoon Activity Over Maharashtra: Hailstorm Likely At Few Places
May 14, 2025, 1:29 PM | Skymet Weather TeamThe state of Maharashtra is likely to come up with extended pre-monsoon weather activity for the next one week or so. The landlocked subdivisions of Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Madhya Maharashtra become one of the hottest regions during the month of May. Vidarbha and Marathwada are more prone to the pre-monsoon stormy activity, including hailstorms, before the arrival of the monsoon.
However, the upcoming spell will attack Madhya Maharashtra more severely than the other two. The Konkan region will be the last to get its share, commencing sometime next week.
Most parts of Maharashtra received pre-monsoon thunderstorm activity earlier this month. Conditions are becoming favorable for more such activity covering Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada.
The north-south stretch of Madhya Maharashtra, on the lee side of the Western Ghats, from Nandurbar-Dhule-Nasik-Pune to Sangli-Satara-Kolhapur-Sholapur will be more vulnerable to intense weather activity. The region has to watch out for two spells in quick succession between 15 & 16 May and again from 19 to 23 May 2025.
A trough is extending from Vidarbha to Kerala across Marathwada, North Interior & South Interior Karnataka, and interiors of Tamil Nadu. An offshore vortex is likely to come up over the Arabian Sea, abeam the Konkan Coast, in the lower levels, around 18th May 2025.
Another trough is extending from Saurashtra to the east-central Arabian Sea, off the South Gujarat and Konkan regions. Under the combined influence of these features, the state of Maharashtra in general and Madhya Maharashtra in particular will have rain and thundershowers accompanied by strong winds in many places. Some parts of the subdivisions of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada may also witness lightning strikes and hailstorm activity.
The first part of the activity will happen more visibly between 15th and 17th May 2025. The next two days, the 18th and 19th of May, could be leaner. The stormy conditions will pick up again, and more intensely this time, between 20th and 23rd May 2025. While the first part of the activity will largely remain confined to Madhya Maharashtra, the second episode will extend and cover parts of Marathwada as well. Least of all will be the subdivision of Vidarbha. In view of this weather activity, the heat wave will remain in abeyance over the region.
