Prediction of fog continues to be a slightly grey area and mysterious aspects of the fog bring in further challenges in this field

When it comes to foggy conditions making an appearance over various areas, there are three factors that play an important part. For the formation, low temperatures, high humidity levels as well as light winds are the factors that are of primal importance.

However, there are other local factors as well. In fact, local terrain in terms of water bodies, forest cover as well as soil moisture which also matter when it comes to formation of fog.

Both Lahore and Amritsar observe the formation of radiation fog over the region. Moreover, the aerial distance between the two is hardly any. However, the visibility conditions vary by a great extent. Not only this, temperatures also differ by a few notches over these areas.

While Amritsar has been witnessing dense to very dense fog for the past few days, the visibility conditions in Lahore have been much better.  In fact, even if fog has appeared over Lahore, the improvement has been way quicker.

Let us take a look at the visibility conditions between Jan 5 and 9 in the table below:

Similarly, both Dhaka as well as Kolkata are also not far away from each other. Both these regions are in proximity of major rivers. Due to these water bodies, advection fog takes place over both these areas.

It is the winds here that have an important part to play in transporting the fog from the water body to land. Thus, the direction of the wind matters. Taking into consideration the fog data of the past few days, Dhaka has been more frequently witnessing fog, while sky has been mostly clear over Kolkata with better visibility conditions.

In the coming days also, both the combination cities will witness similar weather conditions in terms of fog.
