August 16, 2017 4:33 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The West Coast has been witnessing light to moderate on and off rains continuously. Moderate showers had occurred over few places of Konkan and Goa and Coastal Karnataka in the past day.

While South Konkan and Kerala received light Monsoon rains. In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Tuesday, Mangalore witnessed 27.8 mm of rain, Thane 25 mm of rain, Alibag 16 mm, Matheran 12 mm, Mahabaleshwar 11 mm, Cochin 12 mm, Kottayam 8 mm, Kozhikode 7 mm, Santacruz Observatory in Mumbai 5 mm and Colaba Observatory 10 mm of rain.

These rains can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation that had developed over Kutch and adjoining area. Moreover, a feeble trough which is extending from Kutch to West central Arabian Sea can be attributed for the rains across the West Coast. Additionally, another cyclonic circulation was persisting over Lakshwadeep Island that contributed to these rains. But this weather system has weakened now.

As per Skymet Weather, we expect scattered light to moderate rains to continue over Konkan and Goa, Coastal Karnataka and Kerala for the next 24 hours. Thereafter, the cyclonic circulation which is over Odisha coast is likely to travel towards Marathwada and may intensify into a low-pressure area and this will enhance the rain activity over the coastal area. Thus, the rain intensity is expected to increase around August 18 and good rains will continue till August 20 over the entire West Coast. Majorly Coastal Karnataka and Kerala will receive good rains.
