Gujarat Sizzles With Heat Wave, Ahmedabad Cross Blazing 40 Degree Earliest In Season

Envelope of heat wave has spread further to cover many parts of Gujarat. Mercury soaring to 40°C and above has been observed over Saurashtra & Kutch, North & Central Gujarat and the coastline of South Gujarat.  Inland stations have recorded maximum temperatures about 5-6°C above the normal and therefore met the criterion of heat wave for the state, albeit little early in the season.

Prominent places joining club of 40°C are listed as : Bhuj- 41°C, Rajkot -40°C, Amreli- 40.5°C, Surendranagar- 40.8°C,  Junagarh- 40.5°C, Kandla-40.8°C, Patan- 40.2°C, Deesa-40.2°C, Ahmedabad- 40.2 and Keshod-40°C. Coastal areas of South Gujarat covering Surat, Silvasa, Vapi and Valsad also observed heat wave conditions with temperature soaring in excess of 37°C.

Ahmedabad has  established mile stone of recording 40°C, earliest in the season since 2010.  Ahmedabad has a correlation of 60% occasions having reached 40°C or above in the month of March. Rest of the 40% occasions, it stops short of 40°C, as it happened in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2020.  Also, the erstwhile capital city of the state breach 40°C mark invariably in the last week of the month. However, this season, this record was established early when the city recorded 40.2°C on 14thMar2022.

 Heat wave conditions are likely to prevail over Ahmedabad city and suburbs for the next 3-4 days. Also, the mercury is expected to stay above 40°C for the next 6-7 days. The city of Sabarmati may breach the mark of 42°C during this period. Severe heat wave conditions for the city and some other parts of the state can not be ruled out, over the next 3-4days.
