More Pre-Monsoon Showers Ahead for Delhi | Image: Skymet

On the expected lines, Delhi/NCR was lashed with a dust storm accompanied with strong winds yesterday evening. The kicked-up dust reduced visibility to a few hundred meters and a peal of thunder along with a flash of lightning all around the national capital. Some stations recorded light rainfall. While the base stations Safdarjung, Lodhi Road, Ayanagar and Ridge registered a trace of rainfall, Pitampura had measurable rainfall of 1 mm. Mayur Vihar had decent showers, recording 5 mm of rainfall. The temperatures dipped by 6°-8°C due to squally weather and patchy rainfall. Safdarjung, Palam and Lodhi Road recorded day temperatures marginally below the threshold mark of 40°C and therefore abating heat wave conditions. Even the warm nights observed for the last two occasions eased out, as the minimum temperatures dipped to 21°-22°C, close to the normal range.

Western disturbance is moving across the northern mountains as an upper air trough. There have been scattered rains across the hilly states. An induced cyclonic circulation is marked over Punjab and North Rajasthan. An east-west trough from this feature is stretching across Haryana, Delhi and further on to Uttar Pradesh. Rains have lashed some pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh.

Under the combined influence of these systems, Delhi and suburbs are likely to have more pre-monsoon showers today and tomorrow. A broad clearance in the weather activity is expected on Sunday. Day temperature will hover in the range of mid-30s and well below the 40°C mark. Minimum temperatures will also remain in the comfort range of 20°C. The heat wave will remain in abeyance for the next three days till 14th April. Mercury is likely to soar again next week and possibly touch the 41°-42°C mark between 16th and 17th April. Light showers may occur over the capital city and suburbs around the next weekend, between 18th and 20th April.
