Residents of Rajasthan and Gujarat are bracing for another spell of intense heat as temperatures soar once again in early April. After a brief respite in late March, the mercury is climbing rapidly, with several districts already crossing the 40°C mark.

March witnessed a significant spike in temperatures, particularly between March 10 and 15, when heat wave to severe heat wave conditions prevailed over Gujarat and parts of Rajasthan. While the latter half of March brought some relief, April has begun with a return of scorching heat.

In Gujarat, cities like Rajkot, Surendranagar, Bhuj, Amreli, Ahmedabad, and Deesa have already recorded temperatures above 40°C. Similarly, in Rajasthan, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Kota are experiencing similar conditions, with the mercury inching closer to 40°C.

The resurgence of extreme heat is attributed to an anticyclone over the North Central Arabian Sea. This weather system is pushing hot, dry winds from the west-northwest direction—originating from Baluchistan and South Sindh in Pakistan—towards western Rajasthan and Gujarat. As a result, temperatures are expected to rise further in the coming days, particularly in western and southeastern Rajasthan and most parts of Gujarat.

The oppressive conditions are likely to continue until April 7 or 8, with isolated pockets possibly recording temperatures between 44°C and 45°C. Such extreme heat increases the risk of heatstroke and sunstroke, especially during peak afternoon hours.

Precautionary Measures Advised

Authorities have urged people to take necessary precautions:

• Avoid outdoor activities between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

• Stay hydrated and wear light, loose-fitting clothing.

• Use hats, sunglasses, and umbrellas when stepping outside.

• Be aware of symptoms of heat-related illnesses, such as dizziness, nausea, and excessive sweating.
