Heavy Rainfall Over Gujarat, Hazardous Thunderstorm And Lightening Strikes Likely
May 6, 2025, 2:15 PM | Skymet Weather TeamThe state of Gujarat has witnessed fairly widespread pre-monsoon weather activity. North & Central Gujarat and Saurashtra received moderate showers across the region. Prominent places being Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Baroda, Deesa, Surendranagar, Bhavnagar, Rajkot and Naliya in Kutch. This was the second day in a row for the weather activity and is likely to continue for the next 3-4 days.
The state of Gujarat is alien to the usual pre-monsoon hazards of thunderstorm, dust storm, lightning strikes, heavy rainfall and strong winds. Extreme heat during the pre-monsoon remains the chief hazard. The current spell of stormy conditions is an outlier and unseasonal. If at all any pre-monsoon weather it normally has a brief stint. The current spell commenced the day before and is likely to continue till 10th May 2025. Broad clearance is expected after 11th May 2025.
Earlier, the state was reeling under severe heat wave conditions. A record high temperature in excess of 46°C at Rajkot and sizzling 45°C at Ahmedabad were the highlights on the weather front. Rajkot has dropped to 40°C and Ahmadabad to 38°C in the last 24 hours. Temperatures are likely to dip further and stay well within the comfort range. Hazardous weather conditions at a few places are likely for one or two days.
Today, the heavy weather with thunderstorm, lightning and heavy rains is likely over Anand, Vadodara, Nadiad, Bharuch, Surat, Amedabad, Gandhinagar and Surendranagar. The next two days, Saurashtra will have a bigger share of activity, on 07th & 08th May. The next day, North Gujarat, including Deesa, Patan and coastal Saurashtra from Veraval, Diu, Somnath, Porbandar, Okha, Dwarka and Jamnagar will have moderate to heavy showers. Caution needs to be exercised against strong winds, lightning strikes, thunderstorms and sharp & fierce showers. Though not at all common for Gujarat, chances of a hailstorm at isolated places can not be ruled out.
The weather conditions will start becoming better from the weekend onwards. On 10th May, the intensity of weather will reduce, but the spread will continue, as before. The expanse and scale will further shrink the next day, on 11th May. A broad clearance in the weather activity can be expected from 12th May onwards. The weather conditions will turn benign, except for heat, for the rest of the month.
