Northeast India and rainfall go hand in hand. And even the relentless heatwave over major parts of India, most of northeastern states of India are drenching in good pre-Monsoon rainfall and thundershower activity.

As predicted by Skymet Weather Chief Meteorologist Mahesh Palawat, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall was recorded at many places over northeastern states. Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, Manipur Mizoram witnessed good rainfall.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Wednesday, Cherrapunji recorded 151 mm of heavy rainfall. It was followed by Imphal 75 mm, Haflong 68 mm and Kailashahar 57 mm. Other areas to have observed good showers were Golaghat 35 mm, Kalimpong 16 mm and Jorhat 26 mm.

This rain activity is happening due to a cyclonic circulation over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and surrounding areas. Helping the circulation is the humid winds that are reaching the region from the Bay of Bengal.

With such continuous rainfall over the region, both maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to drop. These temperatures will be below normalcy for 3-4 days. This rainfall activity will not bring hefty change to the current rain deficiency over the northeastern states of India.
