Key Takeaways:

  • Delhi temperatures have remained significantly below normal during the first week of May.
  • Gradual rise in maximum and minimum temperatures is expected over the next 3–4 days.
  • A fresh western disturbance may trigger rain, thundershowers and dust storms on Monday night.
  • Slight drop in temperatures is likely after weather activity early next week.

Delhi temperatures have remained far below normal during this week. The base station Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 33.6°C yesterday, about 6°C below the average for this time of the year. Airport observatory Palam was about 8°C below normal. Minimum temperatures have also persistently stayed below the pentad normal during the first week of May 2026. A rise in both maximum and minimum temperatures is likely during the next 3 days.

Western disturbance has moved away from the northern mountain states. The plains are witnessing a disturbed wind pattern with small-scale cyclonic circulations in the lower levels of the atmosphere. Cyclonic circulations over Haryana, Northwest Uttar Pradesh and Southwest Uttar Pradesh are typical of heat-triggered pre-monsoon patterns. The circulation over Southwest Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Madhya Pradesh will cause scattered weather activity. The other two circulations are dry and therefore, the plains of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi will witness fair weather conditions.

Delhi will witness a gradual rise in temperature over the next 4 days, till Monday, 11th May. Today, the maximum may reach about 35°C (+/- 1°C). The weekend is likely to get further hot. However, no sharp rise is expected during this period. The mercury may barely reach close to the normal mark of around 39°C on Sunday and Monday.

A fresh western disturbance is likely to arrive on 11th May. Both the mountains and plains will get affected with standard pre-monsoon activity. The east-west trough will move in close proximity to Delhi. Rain, thundershowers and dust storm activity accompanied by strong winds are likely on Monday night. Spillover effect with light weather activity is likely on Tuesday as well. A marginal drop in the mercury is expected till mid-week next.
