December 13, 2016 12:24 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Cyclone Vardah made landfall close to Chennai as a severe cyclonic storm bringing heavy to extremely heavy rains along with squally winds over the city. Both Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh were on high alert due to the cyclone.

Residents were advised to stay indoors and follow the instructions given by officials. In wake of torrential rains, rail and air traffic were severely affected.

Now Vardah has weakened into a depression and is likely to lose more strength. With this, rains will reduce over Chennai, however light rains will continue.
