Snow, Rain and Hail to lash North India This Week | Image: Skymet

A fresh western disturbance is arriving shortly over the hilly states of North India. Rain, Thundershowers and  Snow is likely over most parts of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, fairly widespread activity over Himachal Pradesh and scattered over the state of Uttarakhand. The weather activity will commence on 16th Apr and last till the end of the week, with varying intensity. Hailstorms may accompany the lower hills, especially the Jammu region.

The pre-monsoon activity has been paused quite frequently and for longer durations across the hills. Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh have a rainfall deficiency of 50%, and Himachal Pradesh is a shade better with 40% between 01st March and 14th April. The state of Uttarakhand is better off with a marginal surplus of 14% during this period. Northwest India as a whole has a large deficit of 42% rainfall this season. It is halfway through the season now, and the larger the deficit, the more difficult it is to catch up in the later half.

The western disturbance will be aided by an induced cyclonic circulation over the plains. The combined influence will not have any large spread of activity over the plains. At best, it may remain confined to the foothills and that too for a day or two. However, the activity may be quite intense for the state of Jammu & Kashmir and bordering parts of Himachal Pradesh.   The state of Uttarakhand will have a minimal share but still good enough to raise concerns on a couple of days.

The weather activity will commence on a mild note on 16th and 17th April. Light and scattered rainfall is expected over Jammu & Kashmir during this period. The spread and intensity will increase speedily for the subsequent three days, between 18th and 20th April. The weather activity will reach its peak on 19th April and recede substantially on and after 21st April.

The state of Jammu & Kashmir wholly and Himachal Pradesh partly will have to watch out for inclement weather conditions between 18th and 20th April. Disruption of road connectivity, road closures and the danger of landslides is anticipated during this period. Hailstorms and rolling stones will be another area of concern for the locals and visitors, as well. Being a weekend, caution is extended for the tourist and the adventure activities over slopes of the mountains. Better stay at home than get stranded in ‘no man’s land.’
