Kashmir, Himachal brace for a snowy weekend

On account of back to back Western Disturbances, rain and snow have been lashing the hills of North India from last many days. These rain and snow episodes broke the prevailing dry spell that the northern hills were observing during the initial days of January.

After the Western Disturbances approached the hills of North India, snow blanketed most of the popular tourist destinations like Manali, Srinagar, Nainital and Shimla.  The higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir including Gulmarg, Qazigund, Leh and Kupwara were also engulfed with snow.

As the Western Disturbance persists over the Western Himalayan region, scattered rain has commenced over Jammu and Kashmir in the last 24 hours. The intensity of rain and snow is likely to increase by today evening. This would further result in rain and snow activities to increase over many parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

The intensity and spread of rain and snow will further increase on February 18 and February 19. Thus, moderate to heavy rain and snow is expected at many places of Jammu and Kashmir and at a few places over Himachal Pradesh.

By February 19, Himachal Pradesh is expected to start receiving fairly widespread rain and snow. In fact, hills of Uttarakhand may also witness light to moderate rain and snowfall at isolated places.

In a nutshell, this weekend will be delight for the tourists who will be thronging the hilly regions of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh in search of snowfall.
