The frequency of Western Disturbances over the Western Himalayan region has been quite consistent this season, but their intensity has been relatively weak. As a result, widespread heavy snowfall, which is typical for the month of January, has been notably absent. From January 1 to 29, Northwest India is running 80% below its normal rainfall levels. Himachal Pradesh is facing an 81% deficit, Uttarakhand is deficient by 86% and Jammu & Kashmir, along with Ladakh, is lagging by 87%.

Despite the lack of heavy snow, the first phase of the Khelo India Winter Games 2025 began on January 23 in Ladakh. This initial phase, which concluded on January 27, was held indoors. However, the second phase of the Winter Games is scheduled to take place between February 22 and 25 in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. This phase will primarily involve outdoor events, requiring adequate snowfall for ice-based sports.

Currently, the ice cover in these regions is still too thin for outdoor competitions. Fortunately, the weather outlook for the next few days shows promise. A back-to-back series of Western Disturbances is expected to bring significant snowfall to the Western Himalayas between January 31 and February 5. These disturbances will deliver much-needed precipitation to the region, ensuring sufficient snow coverage for the upcoming games.

The intensity of the Western Disturbance during the first week of February is expected to be stronger, which will result in heavy snowfall, particularly over higher altitudes in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh. This snow will create favourable conditions for outdoor events like skiing and ice hockey, which are key components of the Khelo India Winter Games.

The upcoming snow spell will be crucial for ensuring that the second phase of the games can proceed smoothly. As February progresses, the chances for a more typical winter weather pattern seem brighter, with ample snowfall set to transform the region into a winter sports paradise. Athletes and enthusiasts alike are eagerly awaiting the transformation of the terrain into a winter wonderland, ready for the exciting competition ahead.
