Delhi observed a fairly comfortable April, this season. The month recorded just one day of 40°C on 26th Apr 2024. Mercury took a dip thereafter and remained below normal for the last 5 days. Maximum temperature has dropped by nearly 5°C over the last two days. Day temperature plunged to 33.7°C yesterday, a huge 5°C below the normal. The minimum temperature also has dipped below 20°C, this morning. The month of May had made a cool start, similar to last year when the opening day of the month had registered a maximum of just 26.1°C on 01 May 2023, a massive 12°C below the normal.
Courtesy, heavy rain and snow in the hills during the last few days, and strong winds down the slopes of mountains have kept the capital city, rather comfortable. There is no heat wave recorded so far, in the national capital. Strong surface winds over the city and suburbs have added a slight nip in the morning and also expunged the heat, which otherwise looms large at this point in time.
Both, the maximum and minimum temperatures will rise over the next 3-4 days. The day temperature in the high 30’s and morning one in the low 20’s is likely by the end of this week. Strong surface winds over the next 2 days will resist any abrupt rise during the day and keep the morning also fairly pleasant with a soothing breeze. The diurnal variation, the gap between maximum and minimum temperature, is expected to increase till the weekend.
A western disturbance is located far to the west, over Iran and the neighbourhood. The system will move closer and reach Afghanistan and North Pakistan over the next 36 hours. Also, a cyclonic circulation is likely over Central Pakistan and West Rajasthan in the next 24 hours. This feature will shift further east, over South Punjab and Haryana, the next day. The feeble trough will extend up to Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh on 04th May.
There are chances of this trough triggering a spell of pre-monsoon rain and showers, over and around the capital city. These will be fleeting showers and for a brief duration. The national capital will have to wait for the first authentic pre-monsoon thunderstorm, till next week. Midweek next, may sound peal of thunder and gusty winds for Delhi/NCR between 09th and 11th May 2024. In between this period, the base observatory at Safdarjung may once again touch the notional mark of 40°C for a day or two
