Mercury Rise Likely Over Delhi, May Breach Thirty Degrees Early Next Week
Feb 14, 2025, 12:00 PM | Skymet Weather TeamOn the expected lines, day temperatures have dipped over Delhi and suburbs over the last two days. Base observatory at Safdarjung recorded a maximum of 24.8°C, a drop of 3°C from the earlier high of 29.7°C on 11th Feb. Still, the temperature was higher than normal by 1.4°C. Now, the temperatures are likely to rise over the next few days.
Persistent strong winds have suppressed the day temperatures over the capital city. The surface and low-level winds continue to be strong today, as well, albeit slightly weaker than before. The mercury may rise marginally today to reach a high of 26°C. The temperatures are likely to rise further over the weekend and early next week. The mercury may climb to breach the 30°C mark, the first time in this season, around mid-week next.
Temperature fluctuations are purely triggered by the change in the prevailing wind speed and direction. Dry northwesterly winds bring cooler than normal conditions and a moist easterly component adds warmth. Feeble cyclonic circulation is likely to come up over Rajasthan, in the close vicinity of Delhi, tomorrow. The upper winds will slow down and may change direction, too. Following this change, a western disturbance is likely to approach on 17th Feb. An induced cyclonic circulation will also accompany the plains.
Under the influence of these features, the temperature profile will change once again. An incremental rise in the day temperature is expected over the next 5 days, between 14th and 18th Feb. A western disturbance is likely to arrive next week. Scattered rainfall is likely over Delhi/NCR on 19th & 20th Feb. The rainfall will be light and patchy and commence late in the day, on 19th Feb. Weather conditions will improve during the second half of the day on 20th Feb. The wet spell will sink the temperatures significantly, but for a short period, more so, between 18th and 19th Feb. A fresh spike in the mercury can be expected during the weekend, between 21st and 23rd Feb.
