Monsoon in India is one such time of the year when weather gods drop their inhibitions and pour their hearts out with rain to bring relief from the scorching Indian summer. Usually, Kerala receives the first good Monsoon rainfall in the month of June.
It is in June that the Monsoon onset starts over India and keeps on taking pace as Monsoon rains builds up in the country. But the Monsoon onset date covers the entire country in July only.
Given the increasing pace of Monsoon rain, it is the per day average rainfall that also keeps on increasing. In the first week of June, the average daily rainfall per day is 2-3 mm. Similarly the average daily rainfall for second and third week is 4-5 mm and 5-6 mm. In the last week of June the average daily rainfall reaches 7-8 mm.
In 2016, the month of June, especially the first half has been poor when it comes to rainfall. There was a rainfall deficiency of about 25%. It was only the last 9 days where the rainfall recorded was normal in most areas and above normal in few areas. This means that only the 1/3rd of June lived the good Monsoon rains. The remaining 21 days in June were below normal.
In June, the overall rainfall deficiency was of 11% for India. But deficiency figure has been achieved only with the good rainfall happened in the last 10 days of June. Before that, the rainfall deficiency recorded was around 18%, the significant drop in the deficiency made it to 11%.
163.6 mm is the normal rainfall figure for the month of June in India. For the entire Monsoon season this rounds up to 18% of the total Monsoon rainfall.
For the month of July, 289 mm rainfall is considered normal which rounds up to 32% of the Monsoon rainfall. The good news is that July is expected to provide above normal rains.
As per latest models the first 10 days for the month of July rainfall looks really promising for most parts of North, Central and Eastern India.
Just like June, the daily rainfall figures rise in July also. The initial days of July record an average of 8 mm of rain daily. By the time July ends the average daily rainfall reaches up to 10 mm.
Any deficiency in July, even for a week or 10 days will make it extremely difficult to cover up the deficiency created in June.
