Good spell of rain approaching hills of North India

Subdued rainfall activity has been observed in the hills of North India since last 24 hours. Light rain has been witnessed in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Pockets of Uttarakhand have received moderate rain showers. After observing heavy rainfall on account of a Western Disturbance, a period of quiet activity has been experienced in the region.

But now, another Western Disturbance (WD) residing over North Pakistan and adjoining region is moving eastwards towards Jammu and Kashmir. Also, the Monsoon trough is likely to shift closer to the foothills. The combination of the WD as well as the Monsoon trough is likely to intensify rainfall activity in the foothills around July 10-11. More rain will be observed over the state of Uttarakhand as compared to Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

But with the passage of the WD, brief respite is likely in the region. But this will just be a breather as more rain is expected from July 13 to July 15. These rains will be triggered by a low pressure area which is currently providing rains over East India. This low pressure area is likely to move along the trough and will reach the hills in North India around July 13. Heavy rainfall is expected on July 14 when the activity is likely to peak.

Again, Uttarakhand will receive much of the rain with Himachal Pradesh also observing good amounts of rain. Jammu and Kashmir will receive comparatively less rainfall. This prolonged spell of rain will again bring down temperatures in the region and have a cooling effect. Uttarakhand has been reeling under heavy rainfall with landslides being reported in parts of the state including Nainital. With more rain expected in coming days, care and caution must be exercised.
