The state of Gujarat has been witnessing good showers since past few days. So much so that these heavy rains have reduced the rain deficiency to a great extent. However, Saurashtra and Kutch region is still rain deficit.

As on June 28, Gujarat region is rain deficient by 7 percent, while Saurashtra and Kutch region by 41 percent.

The ongoing rain and thundershowers can be attributed to a low pressure area persisting over Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Northeast Arabian Sea. Also, an off shore trough is running along the West Coast up to Kerala.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Wednesday, Deesa recorded heavy showers of 40 mm, followed by Surat that witnessed 30 mm of rains. Other areas that observed some good showers include Porbandar 18 mm, Ahmedabad and Baroda 12 mm, Bhavnagar 8.5 mm, Dwarka 6 mm, Naliya 3 mm, Rajkot and Okha 1 mm of rainfall.

In wake of these weather systems, good rains are likely to continue over several places over Gujarat region. In fact, one or two places may receive heavy to very heavy rains over southern parts of Gujarat and also over western districts such as Porbandar, Okha and Dwarka.

These intermittent showers will continue to batter the area for at least 4 to 5 days and the intensity of these rains may vary day to day. For now, the dry spell is not foreseen to make a comeback over Gujarat.
