Mumbai rains to get intense again, heavy showers ahead

Updated on Sep 20, 2017: Extremely heavy rains have been recorded in Mumbai in the past day. Santacruz Observatory recorded 304 mm and Colaba Observatory 210 mm of rain. However, the rain intensity is likely to reduce over Mumbai and light to moderate showers will be witnessed by the Mumbaikars.

Updated on Sep 19, 2017: Heavy rains have begun over many parts of the city of Mumbai. As reiterated by Skymet Weather, these showers are expected to continue for at least 2 to 3 hours. There may be a short break thereafter, but due to the cyclonic circulation in proximity of Mumbai, there may be a regeneration of clouds and some spells of rainfall may occur over the city during night hours as well.

However, these rains will take a backseat by tomorrow and the skies will clear up. These rains will not be as intense as the deluge which had wreaked havoc over Mumbai on August 29.

Meanwhile, the possibility of traffic jams due to very heavy rains cannot be ruled out. Thus, Mumbaikars should be ready to face traffic snarls while going back from work today and expect to be late for home.

Published on Sep 18, 2017: Mumbai rains have been playing enough games already for the past few days. So much so that the city of dreams has been witnessing various shades of weather. While the maximum city has recorded a few good spells of rain, there have been times when good showers have remained in hiding from the capital city of Maharashtra.

The day before also, the city did record moderate rains to the tune of 34 mm. As far as the last 24 hours are concerned, the city of Mumbai did record very light rains. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, both the Santa Cruz as well as the Colaba observatories recorded 1 mm of rains each, respectively.

However, as per weathermen at Skymet Weather, Mumbai rains are expected to pick up pace once again and the city that never sleeps is expected to witness good showers during the next 24 hours. In fact, these rains and thundershowers are expected to be moderate to heavy in nature. Thus, the possibility of a few sharp spells over some parts of the city cannot be ruled out.

The reason for these rains can be attributed to several weather features persisting in proximity of the region. The off-shore trough running along the West Coast is one of them. The other system happens to be a cyclonic circulation which is currently over the Kutch region and its adjoining areas. Not only this, another cyclonic circulation persists over Madhya Maharashtra and adjoining Konkan region.

Thus, Mumbaikars will witness moderate to heavy showers during the next 2 to 3 days. However, these rains are not likely to be as intense as the rains that caused deluge on August 29.
